Three PC leadership candidates
as nominations close
Paul Davis, Steve Kent and John Ottenheimer

ST. JOHN’S, July 7, 2014 – With the close of nominations today at 12 noon NDT / 11:30 a.m. ADT for the leadership of the Progressive Conservative Party of Newfoundland and Labrador, leadership Convention Committee co-chairs Sheila Kelly-Blackmore and Tommy Williams announced that the three leadership candidates are Paul Davis, Steve Kent and John Ottenheimer.

“Across our province, delegate selection meetings will be held between July 14 and August 14, 2014,” said Williams. “We encourage Party supporters throughout Newfoundland and Labrador to participate in the delegate selection process as we prepare for an exciting leadership convention weekend in mid-September.”

Kelly-Blackmore said, “The PC leadership convention and Annual General Meeting will be held on September 12-13, 2014 at the Delta Convention Centre in St. John’s. The PC Leader will be elected by secret ballot on Saturday, September 13. This is a tremendous time of renewal for our Party as we prepare to choose the next Leader of our Party and the next Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador.”

Broadband to over 5,000 more households

concerns today regarding federal changes to the Temporary Foreign Worker program(June 26 and July 17, 2014) Advanced Education and Skills minister Kevin O’Brien expressed concerns today regarding federal changes to the Temporary Foreign Worker program, specifically the provision that links access to the program to the regional unemployment rate. “The restriction on temporary foreign workers in low-wage sectors will be acutely felt in areas with high levels of economic activity, especially western Labrador, where employers may be challenged to recruit locally. I have spoken to Minister Kenney regarding our concerns with linking the program to unemployment rates, and he is aware of the regional circumstances here in our province. I will be meeting with him again in the coming weeks and this issue will be my top priority.”

Poverty Reduction Strategy Progress Report(June 4, 2014) The Provincial Government reaffirmed its commitment today to reducing poverty in Newfoundland and Labrador with the release of the latest Poverty Reduction Strategy Progress Report. The following are highlights of the progress report: a 50 per cent drop in the number of persons living with low incomes occurred from 2003 to 2011, according to Statistics Canada Low Income Cut-Offs; median Family Income increased by 26 per cent; in 2013, about seven per cent of the province received Income Support, the lowest level ever recorded and a trend that is expected to continue; and, for students from low-income families beginning university, Newfoundland and Labrador remains the most affordable province on the Cost of Learning Index.
