Everyone registering for the September 12-13, 2014 Leadership Convention and Annual General Meeting must complete and return the new registration form. Download the new registration form here. Forms submitted for the event previously scheduled for July cannot be accepted for the September convention. Please note that observer status registration and extra meal tickets are not available. Three PC leadership candidates
as nominations close
Paul Davis, Steve Kent and John Ottenheimer

ST. JOHN’S, July 7, 2014 – With the close of nominations today at 12 noon NDT / 11:30 a.m. ADT for the leadership of the Progressive Conservative Party of Newfoundland and Labrador, leadership Convention Committee co-chairs Sheila Kelly-Blackmore and Tommy Williams announced that the three leadership candidates are Paul Davis, Steve Kent and John Ottenheimer.

“Across our province, delegate selection meetings will be held between July 14 and August 14, 2014,” said Williams. “We encourage Party supporters throughout Newfoundland and Labrador to participate in the delegate selection process as we prepare for an exciting leadership convention weekend in mid-September.”

Kelly-Blackmore said, “The PC leadership convention and Annual General Meeting will be held on September 12-13, 2014 at the Delta Convention Centre in St. John’s. The PC Leader will be elected by secret ballot on Saturday, September 13. This is a tremendous time of renewal for our Party as we prepare to choose the next Leader of our Party and the next Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador.”

Agreement on public service pension reform

Provincial Government and Unions Reach Agreement on Public Service Pension Plan Reform(September 2, 2014) “In reaching this agreement, we are protecting a defined benefit pension plan for current and future Public Service Pension Plan members and we are working to address the most significant financial issue facing the province. This agreement is contingent on joint trusteeship, meaning that both government and members will share responsibility for the plan equally, and deficits will no longer rest solely on the taxpayers of Newfoundland and Labrador,” said Premier Tom Marshall.

Toward province-wide Basic 911

(August 28, 2014) The Provincial Government has determined the locations and boundaries of the Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs), also known as 911 call-taking centres, for the expansion of Basic 911 service. The City of St. John’s will continue to operate its current 911 call-taking centre and will expand service to the remainder of the Avalon Peninsula. The City of Corner Brook will operate the second 911 call-taking centre, and will answer calls from the remainder of the province. Once province-wide Basic 911 service is expanded it will be available to all residents via landline and/or wireless telephones, where a cellular signal can be accessed.

Full-day Kindergarten planning moving forward

(August 27, 2014) The Provincial Government is moving forward to the next stage of implementation of full-day Kindergarten, announced in Budget 2014 and scheduled to be available province-wide in September 2016. Phase I of full-day Kindergarten planning included preparations leading up to the Budget 2014 announcement. Phase II includes conducting site visits at schools throughout the province to determine specific space requirements, finalizing plans, developing and delivering professional learning focused on play-based learning in the Kindergarten setting, and ensuring teaching resources are assigned to ensure all Kindergarten students will have access to the benefits of full-day programming in 2016.

Strengthening relationships with Aboriginal people

(August 19, 2014) Premier Tom Marshall today announced several new initiatives to support building Aboriginal capacity and expertise within government: the development of a Land Claims and Self-Government Agreements Implementation Policy; the development and implementation of an Aboriginal Human Resource Strategy; and a review of Aboriginal content and delivery in provincial school curriculum. This work will be supported by the creation of a new Aboriginal Liaison position within the Labrador and Aboriginal Affairs Office.

Independent review of hydraulic fracturing

(August 11, 2014) Natural Resources minister Derrick Dalley today announced that the Provincial Government will establish a panel to undertake an independent review of hydraulic fracturing in western Newfoundland.
