Premier’s “Report Card” Ignores Needs of the People

Paul Davis, Leader of the Official Opposition, says, “The Premier’s self-congratulatory ‘report card’ on his flimsy ‘way forward’ document is really just an exercise in trying to divert people’s attention from the Liberals’ failure to address the real needs of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians and grow our battered economy.”

“The ‘way forward’ document says practically nothing about the issues that really matter to the people of the province. It’s full of fluff words like ‘review,’ ‘begin,’ ‘proceed’ and ‘develop’, but lacks the concrete actions that will make a real difference in people’s lives. Sadly, halfway through his second year in office, the Premier has no progress to report.”

“What’s worse is that they have not even kept the few deadlines they set for themselves. They’ve actually modified their commitments to hide their failure to achieve them. They’ve quietly extended their own deadline for a generic royalty regime, even though our government already announced it in 2015, two years ago. They also cheated on their own report card by including decisions the English School Board had already taken to reduce the government’s footprint,” he said.

Davis added, “The Premier expects Newfoundlanders and Labradorians to hold him to a lower standard than the one he promised in 2015, when he committed to an economic growth plan. Where is the economic growth plan the Premier promised? Halfway through their second year, the Liberals have not only failed to deliver a plan for growth, but sent our economy reeling by overtaxing consumers, leaving thousands of public employees worried and afraid to invest, and sending businesses and other employers into decline. While every other province is expecting to grow in the coming year, this province under the Liberals is in freefall, and people are worried about what’s to come. The Liberals have failed to lead and floundered without direction. Nothing in their ‘way forward’ document delivers the comprehensive, sound, strategic economic plan our province needs.”

“This Liberal government does not have a plan, and people are losing hope and losing patience. Survey after survey shows the vast majority of people in this province are deeply dissatisfied with the performance of this government. After being crushed by exorbitant tax increases and unending uncertainty, who can blame people for being dissatisfied with the Ball Liberals? The only ones patting the Ball Liberals on the back for their ‘way forward’ charade are the Ball Liberals,” said Davis.
