Liberals Failing to Provide Needed Leadership on Central Health Issues: Brazil

St. John’s, NL (June 14, 2018) – David Brazil, Opposition Health Critic, is raising concerns surrounding the Liberal Government’s failure to provide needed leadership in our healthcare system after today’s reports of additional issues at Central Health.

“Today’s reports of intimidation and workplace harassment occurring within Central Health are troubling, and continues a longer trend of failed leadership in our health care system from this Government,” said Brazil.

“Internal infighting between health care administrators and medical professionals is not only costly to taxpayers, but risks distracting from a shared goal of providing quality, patient-focused health care to the people of Newfoundland and Labrador.”

In a recent interview, Liberal Health Minister John Haggie stated that it was not the role of government to “step in” and address these concerns. However, in e-mails recently obtained through an access-to-information request, Minister Haggie is alleged to have directly interfered in internal Central Health matters within the last year.

“Despite the Minister’s comments, it is clear that Minister Haggie has been willing to interfere in decision-making within Central Health,” added Brazil.

“However, the Minister’s failure to act and help resolve these serious issues shows a complete lack of leadership on behalf of this government. This is simply not good enough.”
