Single-Use Plastic Bag Ban Needed: Crosbie
St. John’s, NL (June 21, 2018) – Today, Progressive Conservative Leader Ches Crosbie is joining the call for a ban on single-use plastic bags.
“Collectively, we need to do our part to cut waste, reduce environmental damage, and promote sustainable practices,” said Crosbie
“That is why I am, on behalf of our Progressive Conservative Party, today joining the call for a province-wide ban on single-use plastic bags.”
Crosbie joins community organizations and municipal stakeholders, such as Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador, who have also been calling for the ban.
“A ban on single-use plastic bags will not only reduce the negative environmental impacts of plastic pollution, but also reduce plastic consumption in our fishery,” added Crosbie
“At a time when inexpensive, efficient alternatives to single use-plastic bags exist – including biodegradable options – it’s time to move forward with the ban.”
The Ball Liberals have previously stated they are in favour of the ban, however they are yet to introduce legislation on the matter. Crosbie is urging them to make this a priority for the fall legislative session.
“People are tired of hearing one thing from this government while they do another. The time to act is now,” urged Crosbie
“If the Liberals are serious about banning single-use plastic bags, I’m urging them to put forward legislation this fall so we can accomplish just that.”
