Federal and Provincial Liberals in Conspiracy of Silence on Equalization: Crosbie

St. John’s, NL (June 22, 2018) – Today, Progressive Conservative Leader Ches Crosbie labeled provincial silence on equalization a conspiracy with the federal Trudeau Liberals.

“The purpose of the surprise renewal of the existing equalization plan is to enable Quebec to hog the money,” said Crosbie

“The conspiracy of silence between our Members of Parliament and Premier Ball turns equalization into a slush fund for federal Liberals to buy votes in Quebec.”

Quebec currently receives $11.7 billion of the available $19 billion in equalization. Under latest projections from the Parliamentary Budget Office, Quebec’s share of total federal equalization will eventually increase from 60 per cent up to 75 per cent. Meanwhile, Newfoundlanders and Labradorians continue to experience an unemployment rate over twice the national average.

In 2017, Premier Ball spoke about how his government would make a serious case for a new formula during equalization renegotiations this year. At the time, Ball cited the unfairness of Quebec’s role in the formula. However, the federal government yesterday announced the renewal of the same formula for another five years, with no comment from Premier Ball.

“At a time when we need a bull dog to defend our interests, we have a lap dog,” added Crosbie

“When will our silent Premier and our silent Liberal MPs stand up to Ottawa and do what is right for Newfoundland and Labrador?”
